Despite losing his appeal to regain the points he won in Evansville, Staats/Red Bull's Mike Day reigned supreme in Louisville, standing at the top of the podium when the dust settled. Day had a little help in semifinal #1 when Hyundai/GT's Randy Stumpfhauser failed to make the main, finishing fifth. Things didn't look too good for Mikey in semi #2 as he was in seventh around most of the track. However, Staats/TLD's Robert DeWilde was on the bubble in the fourth spot going into the last turn. Mike had by then worked his way into the number five position going into the last straight rhythm. You can probably guess what happened then. Mike used his crazy track speed to get past DeWilde, squeeze into the final and simultaneously knock Bob out, which ALMOST clinched the final. Crupi's Cristian Becerine still had a mathematical chance to take the title, but he would have to win the final and Day would have to finish dead last. Unlikely, but possible. Didn't quite work out that way for Becerine as Day took a fourth and the title although Haro's Warwick Stevenson (who had been flying all weekend) grabbed the main event win.
