When I made arrangements to drive on up to Roseville for the Spring Nationals I knew it would be a big event. I mean it's home of the NorCal / Sac Town Pull, Tangent Tuesdays, Big Tool locals and on and on. The area just oozes character and characters.
Well, I guess I'll get right to the major event of the weekend. The one that everybody is going to be talking about. That, of course, is "Baby D's" impromptu streaking during the Hyper team interview!.....
OK, OK I'm kidding. The big talk before, during and after the race was ABA two time Amateur number one Josh Oie's pro debut. Josh had talked to me (and several other people) for a few weeks now asking our opinions on whether we thought he should turn or not. He received positive and negative sides of going pro from a variety of backgrounds. In the end though I think Josh saw the challenge of racing pro as a spark to his riding, which he felt had gone flat.
It would be a great storybook fantasy to say that Josh went out there, dominated every race and won his first two pro races.

However, with that caliber of riders currently racing in the A Pro class that would be unrealistic. In fact, Josh did not make the main on Saturday. However, that was due more to unclipping out of the gate in a quarter than not doing well enough. Josh did do well. He won motos and even took the win in his A Pro semi on Sunday. Josh finished a respectable seventh at the end of the three mains on Sunday. All in all it was a good showing from Josh. You could almost hear the weight fall off of Josh's shoulders as the first weekend of racing pro came to an end and the smile returned to the face of a pretty stressed out Josh Oie.
First main of A Pro on Saturday Answer's Danny Caluag got the pop out of the gate. However, apparently what happens in Vegas does NOT stay in Vegas as Revtec's Derek Betcher brought his first straight pull with him. Derek motored into the lead with the Haro rider from Australia closely following (no, Warwick didn't line up in the wrong gate - Australian rider Jamie Gray made the trip over for the Roseville national). Second main the Australian would take the win with a great start and first straight. Betcher was taken out of the mix being ridden high in the first turn. Caluag made a charge at the last turn but couldn't make the pass happen. Derek won the third main from gate to line in the third moto. However, Brew/Promax rider Aaron Johnson slipped into second. Even though Derek had won the first and third mains his second main finish would mix up the points just enough to give the consistent Johnson the overall win.

On Sunday it looked as though Betcher would run the table with a solid win in the first main and a commanding lead in the second main. However, Caluag caught up to Betcher and gave him a good race down the last straight. As they headed towards the line Betcher went down feet from the line. Caluag took the win and Betcher got the second sliding on the ground across the line. Derek would regroup and lock in the win for the third main and overall.

Being a slated "Vet" and "Girl" pro race, Roseville had the full menu of pros. Redline's Kim Hayashi took three straight wins on Saturday to take the overall in Girl's pro. Free Agent's Alice Jung looks to be gaining some power and speed and the aerial moves of Staats rider Arielle Martin and Vendetta's Stephanie Higgins kept every race exciting. On Sunday Hayashi again took the first main. Second main, Higgins got an excellent gate and went into the first turn elbow to elbow with Hayashi. Unfortunately they were so close that they hooked up and both riders went down coming out of the first turn. Martin took advantage and flew by for the win second main. Kim got up slowly and looked to have hurt her ankle in the crash. However, Kim would regroup and take the third main. The overall would go to Utah's own Ariell Martin. P.S. - Make sure to check out Kim's video with Arielle from the recent race in Utah.

Jason Carnes stepped up on Saturday to make it a triple for Redline in the pro division. Redman/Yamaha's Darrin Mitchell and Renato Silva gave Jason a run for his money but at the end of the day Carnes' two wins in the three main event gave him the overall for Saturday. Sunday Supercross rider Todd Parry would bust down the gate for the win first main. D-Mitch and Renato battled for second but Parry took the first win convincingly. The points would get a good shaking second main as Silva laid down a roost from gate to finish. Carnes rode his wake for the second and Mitchell took the third. Parry ended up with the forth that go 'round. With the points all jumbled Mitchell would step it up third main and take the overall. TP and Silva came in second and third respectively but it was all D-Mitch for the Redman clan on Sunday.

Well, you know when somebody is coming out of gate eight and pulling the class about four bike lengths by the second corner their game is on. That is exactly what Redline's Bubba Harris did first main in AA pro. You could almost hear the rest of the class collectively thinking "Oh crap" in their minds. Second main on Saturday it looked as if the name of the game would change as Haro's Warwick Stevenson and Avent rider Javier Columbo squeezed out Harris coming out of the gate. Stevenson took the lead with Columbo in tow. GT/Hyundai's Randy Stumpfhauser powered into second down the second straight. However, prowling the right side of the second straight was Harris. Harris railed the second corner and flew into the third straight. That's where Harris's skill took over as the last two straights are rhythm sections. Harris again pulled into a four bike length lead and the collective thought expletives could be heard just below the crowd's roar. Third main Avent's Donny Robinson did his best to represent the NorCal locals and went bow to bow with Harris down the first straight. However, Harris had the pull and again lead the pack around the rest of the track. It was a three win domination for Harris on Saturday. Sunday, Harris kept up the power and riding that got him the win on Saturday. Some extracurricular excitement came in the first main as Specialized rider Brandon Meadows gave Mongoose's John Purse a tap in the second corner. This sent Purse over the corner and into one of the young audience members. Well, previously Purse had been sent over the same corner by another rider. So, John was not too happy especially when the pimp had cause an injury to the little guy on the sidelines. Now, in Brandon's defense the hip check didn't look extreme and the second corner does drop quickly after the apex. You'll have to check out the video to judge for yourself whether the move was harsh or not. Second main Harris again won with no real challenge. However, the interesting thing was Meadows going over the first turn. I didn't see what had caused that and thought maybe paybacks were indeed a bitch. However, after looking at the video I see that it was not Purse but DR that actually rode Meadows high in the first turn. There was no elbows or anything. Meadows just ran out of coping on the turn and went over. Third main I think DR might have gotten the win at the finish line. Bubba lead the whole lap but DR was right there. However, even if Donny did edge out Bubba, Harris still had the overall locked up.

Props to the two NorCal riders Avent's Donny Robinson and GT Hyundai's Randy Stumpfhauser for winning pro cruiser Saturday and Sunday respectively.
On the amateur side, no class was more exciting to watch then the 36 and over Experts. When you throw Bob and Shawn O'Gorman into the mix with Kirk Chrisco, Ben Barron, Larry Miyamoto, Bob Coover, Robbie Stanford and Brian Shaefle you're just asking for some intense racing. The Spinners team manager duo of Bob and Shawn O'Gorman put the squeeze on Brew/Promax's Kirk Chrisco for the win and second respectively on Saturday. On Sunday Porter Racing's Ben Barron survived the mayhem that took the O'Gormans out of the mix and took the win. I seriously think you could take most of the riders in this main and put them in with the Vet pros and they'd hold their own.

Eddie Cerone is probably one of the most active promoters of his sponsors I've ever seen. He proudly wore the Vendetta colors to the win in 28-35 expert and check out here as he displays his energy drink sponsor's banner during his winner's interview on Sunday. I have to thank Eddie for providing us with a case of Ludicrous energy drink this weekend. As many know I was sick as a dog this weekend and Sunday I think the drink was the only thing that got me through the day and home to Encinitas safely.
Ohio native Jeff Upshaw made the trip out to Roseville for his sponsor Sun/Ringle. Jeff continued to command the attention of every rider from six expert to AA pro as he mysteriously floated through the rhythm sections. Jeff had the handle on the 17-20 cruiser class but in the 17 expert class had his hands full with powerful and skilled riders like Answer's Mike Brabant, Brew/Promax rider Julio Fierro and Vendetta's Michael Larson. Brabant took the 17X win on Saturday and Larson took the win in the twenty inch class on Sunday. In the cruiser class on Sunday Upshaw made a last straight pass on Fierro and Julio congratulated him on the move with the customary "You bi***" - both riders laughed and shook hands though. It was all in fun.
Mongoose sole amateur Joey Bradford continued his domination of the 15 expert class and has a new version of his website up at joeybradford.com. Make sure to check that out.
I have to give props to my little buddy Wes Gunn for doubling on Sunday in the 11 cruiser and expert classes. He had some great competition and Wes is a tad smaller than most of the other riders. However, Wes's heart and determination showed to be pretty large as he dominated the classes on Sunday.
It was great to see some of my Texas buds out as well. Answer's Hunter Pelham won 9 and under cruiser on Saturday. Hurricane/Crupi's Cameron Lowery won 10 expert on Sunday. Jake Trevino - well, he probably won something too but the blue, leasure suit pants made another appearance and stole the spotlight.

ISTV is starting a new concentration on teams and did a great piece on the Challenge/Intense team this weekend. We did a team photo shoot as well as interviews with Gary Oie and spotlights on some of the team's riders. Make sure to look for a team section featuring the videos and photos from our session with the awesome riders on Challenge/Intense. Hammond, Volle, Miranda, Betts, Cheney, Cuyle, Isenberg, Oie, Fay, Bellew - etc. All great riders and great people. The Challenge/Intense team looks for not only great kids but great families to back them up. I'm sure you'll find that is the case with this team.
The Hyper/No Fear/Tangent team also made sure to make use of ISTV's promotion by doing the winning factory team interview at the end of the day on Sunday. Why did they wait until Sunday? Well, TM TJ Johnson was pretty confident that they'd duplicate the win from Saturday. With riders like Chad Kerley (
who I got probably the most Motocross photo of the year in San Berdoo and they'd better use that for an ad!! - haha), Jacob Abbe (
who was boosting the whole second straight in Roseville), Alise Post (
who is also a skilled jumper when she's not heading straight for the photographer on the second straight ;-0 ), Lahsaan Kobza (
who has one of the wickedest stares), Ben Kubalak (
who speaks some great Minnesotan), Mike Lundy (
will he turn in Rockford?) and TM TJ Johnson himself racing A pro in preparation for Vet you can turn in a good sheet without having much room to spare. That they did and Hyper took the factory win both Saturday and Sunday. You have to check out the interview with the Hyper team on Sunday. All I can say (if they don't edit it out) is Richard Lowry (the little one, not the Vet pro) is a nut - haha. There's definitely an abundance of crazy characters in the Roseville/Sacremento area. That's a good thing and I'm sure they'd have it no other way.
Well, that's it from Roseville. I'm still in a daze from this cold I got before the weekend. So, if any of the facts or names are incorrect or forgotten, please forgive me.

I'd like to add, as a P.S., "Get Well's" to Felt's AA pro Paulie Lange who went down hard on Sunday and possibly hurt his spleen. Also Redman's little ripper Lain Van Ogle who went down hard on Saturday and say's he's out for at least a couple weeks or so. Hopefully he'll be able to join his awesome little sister out on the track at the upcoming Rockford nationals.
