After the success of skate legend Stacy Peralta's documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys," apparently the bigwigs at Sony/Columbia Pictures became interested in portraying this crucial period in skateboard history on the big-screen. I was lucky enough to be invited to a sneak-peek screening of the movie, set to release in June 2005. At the screening, many of the Dogtown legends were present; Including, Stacy Peralta, Tony "TA" Alva, Jim "Red Dog" Muir and Lance Mountain. Also in attendance were many of the actors and actresses portraying more youthful versions of these skateboard super-heroes.
After viewing the movie, I am happy to say that it was awesome! Columbia did a great job dating the period with a great 70's soundtrack, hairstyles and lingo. Stunt coordinator Tony Alva did a good job re-creating some of the most monumental and first stunts ever done on a piece of wood with wheels. Modern day Z-boy Craig "WhiteDawg" Whitehead was in attendance to witness his stunt doubling for legendary Z-boy Jay Adams. Craig can be seen ripping the Dog-Bowl, some desert full pipes, and jumping off the Santa Monica Pier!
All in all, I would have to say that "Lordz of Dogtown" will be the best skateboard related movie to be released on the big screen. Check it out this summer at a theater near you!
